Volcano Hakone

A caldera less than 100 km from Tokyo, ringed by hot-spring towns and cradling Lake Ashi. Its steaming Owakudani valley, where eggs boiled in volcanic springs turn black, was born in an eruption about 3,000 years ago; in 2015 a small steam explosion there raised the alert level and closed the valley for months.
