Terms of Service
Last updated:
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the website https://earthquakelive.org, its alert services, widgets and embeds, and the content we publish on our official social media accounts (together, the “Service”), operated by EarthquakeLive.org (“we”, “us”). By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. The Service
EarthquakeLive provides free, real-time information about earthquakes, volcanic activity and ash advisories worldwide, aggregated from public seismological networks, together with experimental machine-learning estimates of short-term seismic hazard and optional alerts by email, Telegram, Discord, web push and webhooks. We may add, change or discontinue features at any time.
2. Not an official warning system
The Service is provided for general information and education only. It is not an official earthquake, tsunami or volcano warning service, and it does not replace instructions from national authorities and civil protection agencies.
- Earthquakes cannot be predicted. Our hazard forecasts are statistical probabilities produced by experimental models; they can be wrong and must not be the sole basis for safety, evacuation, financial or other decisions.
- Event data comes from third-party agencies and may be delayed, incomplete, revised or inaccurate.
- Alerts can be delayed, duplicated or not delivered because of network, platform or technical failures. Do not rely on them for life safety.
In an emergency, follow the guidance of local authorities and call your local emergency number.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service in violation of any law;
- interfere with or disrupt the Service, including through excessive automated requests, scraping that degrades performance, or attempts to bypass rate limits or access controls;
- try to access administrative areas, other people’s subscriptions or our systems without authorisation;
- subscribe other people to alerts without their consent or use the alert system to send spam;
- misrepresent EarthquakeLive content, for example by presenting our forecasts as official warnings or altering them in a misleading way.
4. Content, attribution and embeds
- The website design, software, texts, graphics, videos and logo are owned by EarthquakeLive.org or its licensors.
- You may share screenshots, embed our map widgets and quote our data and content in a way that is not misleading, provided that you credit “EarthquakeLive.org” with a visible link to https://earthquakelive.org. Embed codes and citation guidance are in our Media Kit.
- Underlying earthquake and volcano data belongs to the respective agencies (such as USGS, EMSC and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres) and is subject to their own terms. Map imagery is provided by Esri and its data partners.
- You may not use our name or logo in a way that suggests our endorsement without written permission.
5. Our videos on TikTok, YouTube and other platforms
We publish automatically generated videos and images about earthquakes and volcanic activity to our official accounts on TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Telegram and Discord. These posts have the same informational nature and limitations described in “Not an official warning system”.
Your use of those platforms, including viewing, sharing or reusing our posts with platform features, is governed by each platform’s own terms, such as the TikTok Terms of Service and the YouTube Terms of Service.
6. Alerts and subscriptions
Alerts are free. You are responsible for providing a delivery address you are entitled to use and for keeping it up to date. You can unsubscribe at any time. We may suspend subscriptions that bounce, are abusive or are used to overload the Service.
7. Privacy
How we handle personal information is described in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.
8. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, timeliness, completeness, availability, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, EarthquakeLive.org and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss or damage arising from reliance on information, forecasts or alerts provided through the Service, including personal injury or property damage caused by a natural hazard. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law.
10. Third-party links and services
The Service links to and depends on third-party websites and services that we do not control. We are not responsible for their content, availability or practices.
11. Changes and termination
We may update these Terms from time to time; the “Last updated” date shows the current version. If you continue to use the Service after changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms. We may suspend or end access to the Service, or to any feature, at any time.
