Sanriku & Tohoku Coast

The Sanriku coastline faces the deep Japan Trench, where the Pacific plate subducts at ~8.5 cm/yr. This is the source zone of the devastating March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Mw 9.1) and tsunami, with continuous seismic tremor and aftershock sequences.
