Volcano Avachinsky

A symmetrical cone rising about 25 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital. Its recent eruptions, the last in 2001, were small, but deposits of a prehistoric flank collapse and pyroclastic flows lie beneath the city, which is why it is among Russia's most closely watched volcanoes.
