Marmara Region & Istanbul

The locked Main Marmara Fault segment of the North Anatolian Fault runs directly beneath the Sea of Marmara, just 15 km south of central Istanbul. Following the 1999 Izmit M7.6 rupture, seismologists estimate a high probability of an M7+ earthquake in the coming decades.
