South Island & Alpine Fault

The ~600 km dextral strike-slip Alpine Fault ruptures in ~M8 earthquakes roughly every 300 years. Last ruptured in 1717 (estimated M8.1), paleoseismology puts the 50-year conditional probability of a major rupture above 75%. Also site of the 2011 Christchurch (M6.2) and 2016 Kaikoura (M7.8) complex ruptures.
