Los Angeles

The San Andreas passes some 60 km northeast of downtown, but the faults that actually shook the city - Northridge in 1994, Whittier Narrows in 1987 - are blind thrusts buried under the basin itself, which is why moderate magnitudes here still produce severe local damage.

The event table on this page lists every earthquake recorded inside the felt radius of Los Angeles, newest first, with its distance from the city centre and its magnitude. The top row is therefore the most recent event, and the list updates as soon as a reporting agency publishes a solution.
