An ancient rift basin reactivated by the northward push of the Indian plate, Kutch is one of the most seismically active intraplate regions on Earth. The 1819 Allah Bund earthquake raised a scarp some 90 km long, and the 2001 Bhuj earthquake (Mw 7.7) killed about 20,000 people across Gujarat.
