Scientific Methodology & The Gutenberg-Richter Law

Exponential Frequency Distribution (log N = a - bM)

In statistical seismology, the Gutenberg-Richter law dictates that for every unit increase in earthquake magnitude, the number of events decreases approximately tenfold (b ≈ 1.0). For every magnitude 6.0 shock, the Earth experiences ~10 magnitude 5.0 events, and ~100 magnitude 4.0 events.

By applying calibrated cutoffs (Top-5 for 24h, Top-10 for 30d, Top-15 for the year), our platform filters out high-frequency microseismicity while guaranteeing complete coverage of every notable and destructive event.

Radiated Energy Calculation (E = 10^(4.8 + 1.5M))

Seismic energy released into the Earth's crust is computed using the standard Gutenberg-Richter and Kanamori moment-energy formulation. A single M 7.0 shock releases ~31.6 times more energy than an M 6.0, and ~1,000 times more energy than an M 5.0.

TNT equivalence is benchmarked at 4.184 × 10⁹ Joules per metric ton of TNT explosive yield, providing a direct geophysical comparison for total crustal strain relief.

Frequently Asked Questions

検証済みの科学的・運用面・緊急対応プロトコル

Around the globe, sensitive seismological networks record between 150 and 250 earthquakes per day of magnitude 2.5 or greater. However, only 2 to 5 of these typically reach magnitude 4.5–5.0+, which is the threshold where shaking is noticeably felt by populations or causes minor damage. Our Top-5 cutoff focuses strictly on these significant events.
