Der Taupōsee füllt die Caldera eines der produktivsten rhyolithischen Vulkane der Erde. Sein Ausbruch vor etwa 25.500 Jahren war der größte des Planeten in den letzten 70.000 Jahren, und der Hatepe-Ausbruch vor rund 1.800 Jahren gehörte zu den heftigsten der letzten zwei Jahrtausende. Unruhe im Jahr 2022 führte zur ersten Anhebung seiner Warnstufe überhaupt.
